Description

Perhaps more than any other of my first deep space targets,  the previously submitted DSLR image of M78 from the winter of 2022 left me wanting more; just a hint of color in the reflection nebula itself, a bare hint of Barnard's Loop.

This new image is in HaLRGB reveals the beautiful details contained within the M78 reflection nebula in Orion, including visible and fairly well defined Herbig-Haro objects, bright linear areas of nebulosity associated with ejected jets of ionized gas emanating from newborn stars subsequently colliding with nearby gas fields. In this orientation, the best examples are located in the upper right-most dark nebulosity.  M78 is also known as NGC 2068, and is part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex within the Orion B molecular cloud.  The mouseover image reveals the bright bend of Barnard's Loop in the lower left, but also the diffuse background of Ha throughout the field, all thought to be ionized by the nearby bright stars from the adjacent Orion Nebula itself;  in this orientation, the long-axis of M78 is pointing towards the off-screen M42 off to the upper right . Interestingly, the Ha mono image better reveals some of the HH objects.

Title: Ha in Barnard's Loop and beyond

Description: This Ha mono image reveal this bright corner of Barnard's Loop (Sh2-276) as well as a diffuse background of ionized Ha thought to be ionized by the nearby stars in Orion's Nebula itself.
