Description

A quartet of diverse galaxies in the constellation of Leo: from top to bottom are NGC 3185, 3187, 3189 and 3193.

This group is also sometimes referred to as Hickson 44 (in the catalogue of compact galaxy groups compiled by a Canadian astronomer Paul Hickson) or Arp 316 (in the catalogue of "peculiar", i.e. distorted, galaxies by an American astronomer Halton Arp).

In the middle of the image are two spiral galaxies: on the right is NGC3190, with its distinctive dark lanes of dust along the edge of its disk; on the left is NGC 3178, with distinctive S-shaped arms.

Below them is a bright elliptical galaxy NGC3193. The galaxy above, NGC 3185, is also a spiral galaxy.

All four galaxies are about 100 million light-years away and interact gravitationally. This causes distortions in their shapes; resulting disturbances in the clouds of gas and dust also lead to an increased rate of formation of new stars.

This is a second image from the night late last week, when I didn't get a chance to photograph Comet Pons-Brooks due to cloud cover in the critical evening hours. But then I used most of the night to photograph the galaxies visible on the spring sky. I had already shot some of the data in early March in the coastal dunes in the Netherlands, and now i managed to add more to finalize this photo at the foothills of the Eagle Mountains in Czech Republic.
