Description

Another backyard shot -- emission nebula Sh2-112! A member of the Sharpless catalog, this nebula is located in the constellation Cygnus, which is rich in both stars and emission nebulae. It's only 1.5 degrees away from Deneb, but it's 5,670 lightyears away from us.

Despite how much light pollution I have around here, getting good images is made easier with narrowband filters, which pass only small slices of the light spectrum where gases in space tend to glow. In this case, I'm using the Optolong L-eXtreme filter with my color astro camera, my ZWO ASI294MC Pro. It passes red-glowing light from hydrogen and blue-glowing light from oxygen. So the star colors turn out mostly red and blue, but it ends up making a mostly-natural-looking color palette without me having to manipulate it very much.
