Description

M-102 is a 10.7 magnitude lenticular galaxy in Draco. It features an extensive halo and an equatorial dust lane. This object has been a source of conjecture for many years as to its status as the 102nd entry in the Messier catalog. Both Messier and Pierre Mechain recorded this object, with Messier including it as number 102 in his catalog of 1781. Later, he indicated that it might have been a duplicate observation of M-101, but with the wrong coordinates entered.  Subsequent research by several observers (Smyth, Shapley, Davis and Hogg) have suggested that the confusion was due to several clerical errors, including a 1 hour difference in RA between the M-101 and M-102 observations, as well as mis-identifying Theta Bootis as OMICRON Bootis.  Brecause of both Mechain's and Messier's descriptions, NGC-5866 is a better candidate to be M-102, as M-101 is too large and extensive to have been mistaken for a smaller lenticular galaxy.
