Description

Sh 2-73

This local molecular cloud is also known as LBN 105 and 106, MBM 40 and IREC 53. It contains 20 to 40 solar masses of gas. There are no signs of star formation. It has a pronounced hairpin shape. Its distance has different estimations ranging from 100 to 200 pc (326 to 650 ly).

It was mistakenly listed under the Sh2 catalog, as it is a reflection nebula, namely a galactic cirrus, that from its position, high on the galactic plane (galactic coordinates: (37.69°, 44.55°), reflects back the milky way light, so that we can see it.

The object is very faint, and, from my suburban Bortle 7 location, the signal was well hidden in the background noise, and I tried to do my best to make it more visible without introducing alterations. The weather, as always in the last seven months, has not been cooperating and the conditions were never ideal in any of the four May 2023 recording nights .
