Description

SH2-188 is a planetary nebula in Cassiopeia. Generally, planetary nebulae are symmetrically shaped bubbles caused by a dying star "blowing off" its outer atmosphere and creating the characteristic spherical shell.  However, SH2-188 is moving at a high velocity through the interstellar medium. This has caused it to maintain its leading edge bow shock, while the trailing side of the bubble has been dragged behind it and much of it has dissipated away leaving the faint remnant seen here.
