Description

This object is an open cluster of 27 stars located only 4000 light years away in the southern constellation of Ara. This cluster is visible to the unaided eye and is half the apparent diameter of the full moon. This object's declination of -49 degrees makes it a challenge for northern hemisphere imagers. It transits less than 10 degrees above my southern horizon, which is why the image is blurry.

The stars in this region appear to be especially vivid and colorful. I find the central "star" in this cluster (HD 150136) to be fascinating. It appears in my image to be 5 stars spaced closely together, accompanied by a triple star to its immediate left. Faintly visible at the top of the image is the reddish emission nebula NGC 6188, also known as the Rim Nebula.
