Description

This image captures three beautiful deep sky objects. All three of these objects are part of the Lynds 291 (L291) Molecular Cloud complex, which is located about 5000 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius.

The bright HII emission region is Sharpless 37, also known as IC 1284. The two reflection nebulae are NGC 6590 (upper, also known as vdB 11 and NGC 6589 (lower, also known as vdB 119). Both of these nebula are being illuminated by bright double stars. Adjacent to this area is the dense star field of the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud, better known as M24. The dark nebula that runs throughout this image, LDN 315, includes a number of dark globules.

The interplay between the extensive reddish HII area, the blue/purple reflection nebulae, the vivid orange and blue starfield, and the brown dust throughout the image provide interesting variations in color.
