Description

One of our last nights on our 2018 astro trip, with sucker clouds everywhere, and no chance to get any time on target, I decided to point over at Jupiter. I had been playing with Jupiter from home in CO a few weeks before, and even though for this image I did not take the trouble to put in a Barlow or even to remove my 0.62x reducer, it was striking how much better the seeing was. From my driveway in CO Jupiter was just a pasty jittering featureless blob. From the wonderful skies in Northern New Mexico, the disk was almost stationary, and you could tell you were achieving close focus when the cloud bands just popped into view. As a luck added bonus, I also captured the Great Red Spot near the meridian, and also Io (farthest left) and Ganymede (closest to Jupiter).

This is from a 5007 frame sequence shot only through the Luminance filter on the ASI1600, adjusted to show North up.
