Description

This image includes 2 reddish HII emission objects of different geometric shapes located in the southern constellation of Monoceros.

The bright circular patch is similar to the head of the nearby Seagull Nebula, but is much smaller at only 7 minutes across. Distance estimates of this object vary but most are around 5,000 light years away. One half of it is bisected by numerous dark dust lanes. The nebula is hiding a young double cluster of stars, which may be causing the bluish shade towards the center of the nebula.

More faint but more interesting, a vertical band of reddish emission is apparent to the right of the emission patch. I could find nothing in the literature which describes this emission.

Both nebulae are complemented by bright orange and blue Milky Way stars throughout the foreground.
