Description

IC417, also known as the Spider Nebula, is a large visible emission nebula in the constellation Auriga; the open cluster Stock 8 is linked to it. It is located in the Perseus Arm in a region very rich in nebulosity, several sources of infrared radiation are associated with this nebulous system. Stars in the central cluster have been found to be between 1 and 5 million years old, indicating that star formation here has taken place at various times.

To the left of the image is the nebula NGC 1931, it is an emission (SH2-237) and reflection nebula. The nebula has been referred to as a "miniature version of the Orion Nebula" as it shares some of the same characteristics. It is a mixed emission-reflection nebula, containing a smaller version of the trapezoid in its hot young star cluster centered in the emission nebula. The entire cluster/nebula complex is only 3 arc minutes in size. The distance to Earth is estimated to be about 7,000 light years.
