Description

This object is a tiny 1 arc-minute wide planetary nebula located about 5000 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +46 degrees. It has a diameter of about 1.5 light years.

The tiny blue 18th magnitude central star is faint but clearly visible at the center of the nebula. Several other Milky Way stars are also seen superimposed over the interior of the nebula. Hydrogen is concentrated around the rim while oxygen is strong throughout. Interesting bright arcs and dark regions are present throughout the nebula.

Scientific studies with extended narrowband exposures have confirmed that this is a bi-polar PN that we are viewing almost side-on. The bi-polar axis extends from 5 to 11 o’clock. Along this axis the nebula has experience breakout of the two main lobes, which creates the slightly diffuse view of the nebula along the rim at those positions.

This nebula has been burdened with the nicknames of the Peek-a-Boo Nebula and the Disk Ghost Nebula. I am not sure what it has done to deserve that.
