Description

SH2-204 (LBN 689)  is cataloged as a bright nebula, but for an amateur imager, it is anything but bright! The nebula is a very dim SHO target, consisting mostly of Ha. Relative to Sii and Oiii, the Ha is the strongest emission line, making up the majority of the data recorded. Sii is very weak, overlaying the Ha gas, while the Oiii is even weaker, appearing to radiate from the lower (in my image) edges of the main nebula.  SH2-204 appears to be a rarely imaged target, and based upon my experience trying to process it, perhaps this is why. I found less than 20 images of Sh2-204 on Astrobin.  As the signal is very weak, noise is a big problem when trying to stretch the data. Even with almost 50 hours of data, this has been by far the most difficult nebula I have processed to date. I almost gave up several times, finally arriving with an image I felt was good enough to share.
