Description

The Dolphin Nebula, also known as Sharpless-308, appears to be diving towards a Cosmic Reef, which is a region called Sh2-303. A study from 1982 shows that the nebula is ionized by not just one, but three different stars - the Wolf-Rayet stars WR 6, Sh2-304, and Sh2-308. When observed in the Ha wavelength, it seems that Sh2-303 is the brightest part of a ring that surrounds several B-class giant stars, including LS92 (B2/3 III) and HD 51200 (B2 III/IV). This suggests that the Dolphin Nebula is not only ionized by WR 6 but also by other stars in the region.

The Dolphin Nebula itself is a dim nebula formed around a massive Wolf-Rayet star. The bright star located near the center of the nebula is known as EZ Canis Majoris, EZ CMa, or WR 6. These massive stars are believed to have a mass up to 20 times greater than the Sun and are thought to be in their pre-supernova phase.
