Description

This image captures the cyan OIII emission nebula of WR 134, surrounded by a sea of red HII nebulosity.

WR 134 is a Wolf-Rayet nebula located 6000 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +36 degrees. The nebula is 50 light years across and its apparent size to us is about the size of our full moon.  WR 134 is the star labelled in the mouseover.

Wolf-Rayet nebulae are one of my favorite DSO types because of their strong nebula signals that take the form of striking spherical shell shapes. Other Wolf-Rayet nebulae include the Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635), the Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888), Thor's Helmet (NGC 2359), and the Gourd Nebula (Sh2-308). This nebula looks very much like a portion of the Gourd Nebula.

Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars are very hot massive stars which produce powerful stellar winds, resulting in these fantastic nebula shapes. As shown in the mouseover, there are two Wolf-Rayet stars in this vicinity, WR 134 and WR 135. Although this object is named after WR 134, both of these stars have been identified as possibly being the source of the nebula in this image.  The mouseover image shows a faint but distinct spherical OIII globe around WR 134, with its upper right surface aligning with the OIII arc fronts of the main nebula, so my guess is that the star WR 134 is driving this nebula.

Many other obscure but interesting objects are seen in this region, as seen in these 5 attached cropped images from the main image:
   - Revision E:   Small PN-like HII Region (G074.469+00.910, at left-center image edge)
   - Revision F:   Larger HII Region (LBN 183, at upper-right of image)
   - Revision G:  HII Nebula with Pillars (Dobashi 2246, at lower right corner of image)
   - Revision H:  Open Star Cluster (NGC 6871, at bottom of image, just right of center)
   - Revision I:    Reflection Nebula (GN 20.10.7, at lower left of image)
