I had over looked this target through the mid and late part of the summer. I decided to give a try with 4-5 hours in the western sky before hitting 30 degree mark. Data was definitely limited, but I really like the framing with reducer at 280 mm FL.

SH2-119 "The Clamshell Nebula" is a large emission nebula 2 degree east of the North America Nebula in Cygnus. The bright star Cygni 68 appears to be bright Peral with the large mouth in the swirling blue ocean water. An estimated 1,800 light years from earth, the formation measures approximately 2 x 3 degrees in our apparent field of few. With some basic trig, this yield that the formation is roughly 60 x 90 light years.

My favorite part of the images are the dark dust formation and spiculated formation. The accompanying bok globules located in the right portion of the nebula provide additional eye candy.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
