Description

SH2-101 is a Bright Nebula in the constellation Cygnus. It is commonly referred to as the Tulip Nebula, as it resembles the flower. Located near the center of the nebula is the very luminous star HDE 227018 which is assumed to be the source of much of the ionization of the nebula gasses. Located upper right of the Tulip lies the black hole Cygnus X-1, part of a very tight binary system with a blue supergiant star. Cygnus X-1 is a stellar mass black hole, produced by the collapse of  a massive star. The black hole forms a rotating disc that funnels material it pulls from its companion supergiant in toward the center of the disc. Some material caught in the rotation is redirected  in the form of energy jets. This  arc or bow-shock is created by the interaction of these jets with the interstellar gas and dust that are present in the area.
