Description

This object is a blue reflection nebula, known as both GN 16.05.2 and Bernes 149, located in the middle of a dark nebula, known as both as Lupus 3 and Dobashi 6651.  Both nebulae are believed to be about 500 light years away.

The dark nebula spans just over 1 degree, which corresponds to a width of 10 light years.

Although the cloud complex is one of a number of clouds named for the constellation of Lupus, this cloud is actually slightly across the border in the adjacent constellation of Scorpius, at a declination of -39 degrees.

This dark cloud contains many unseen protostars and is the site of proficient star formation.
