Description

This poster captures 25 of my favorite concentric ring galaxy candidates.

Galaxies can have many different types of rings – see this poster for some examples.  I have seen up to 2 closed rings in galaxies, an inner ring and an outer ring.  But what about numerous (more than 2) concentric rings?  

Scientists say that concentric ring formation is possible, but in my experience I have yet to see a galaxy with more than 2 truly concentric rings.  This poster contains the galaxies which I have found to be closest to a true concentric ring pattern.  But if you look closely, especially in the inverted view, you will see that almost all of the rings have a slightly spiral nature to them.

Dr. Arp included a category in his collection called Concentric Ring galaxies, but these were actually elliptical galaxies with shells from previous mergers.  To me, these aren't really examples of concentric ring galaxies.
