Description

This image is taken looking almost at the zenith which is located close to the centre of the upper edge of the frame.

On March 24 2023 the aurora became particularly intense after 1.00am.
What was truly astonishing is that at a certain time the aurora appeared to emanate explosively from a point directly overhead, not unlike a firework going off.
The aurora spread out rapidly over the course of less than a minute or so forming dome like structures overhead, filling one's entire field of view, with alternating concentric green and pinkish red banding. The banding and the dome like structure diffused away over several more minutes.

I learned subsequently that I had witnessed what is often referred to as an auroral corona (crown). Luckily I was running a time lapse sequence on my camera pointing roughly at the zenith. The rest of my party slept through the show.........

Canon 800Da, Sigma 18-35 mm Art at f1.8 and 18mm, ISO 1600, 2s (the previous frames to this one burned holes in the sensor!)
