Description

NGC 4438 is the most exotic galaxy to interact in the Virgo group, with a heated core due to an uncertain energy mechanism in the environment. This energy mechanism could be starburst regions, or black hole energy from active galactic nuclei (AGNs). It has a highly distorted disk and long tidal tail due to interactions with other galaxies, which explains why different sources classify it as either a lenticular galaxy or a spiral galaxy. It also shows expansion and moderate starburst in the past, and in the direction of NGC 4435 there is a considerable amount of neutral hydrogen and its replacement interstellar material - hydrogen atoms, hydrogen molecules, interstellar dust, and hot gas, suggesting tidal interactions with the latter and the impact of shock pressure deprivation. As NGC 4438 passes through Virgo's intergalactic material at high speed, it increases encounters between the two galaxies.
