Description

This is M13, the Great Globular Cluster in Hercules. Not quite a galaxy, it's basically a "clump" of over 100,000 gravitationally bound stars. It's also pretty close — around 25,000 light years from us.

In 1974, the Arecibo radio telescope beamed an encoded message at M13, trying to say hello to potential extraterrestrial life. With 100,000 stars, SOMEONE's got to be living in there, right?

Hopefully we'll hear back in another 50,000 years. Let's hope we're still around.
