Description

This is my first planetary nebula and, at 41 hours, the most time I have spent on a single object.

In researching this nebula, the white dwarf responsible for it has an unusual relationship with the surrounding nebula. One theory holds that the white dwarf is merely passing through the gas cloud and is actually several times older than it. Supporting this theory is the fact that the speed of the white dwarf is different than that of the ionized gas.

I started this project with intent to do something different than the usual galaxies and nebulae I have been imaging and was pleased at the final result. This object is fainter than I expected it to be and the modern processing tools developed by Nikita Misiura and Russell Croman were enormously helpful in the processing.  One really cool thing about this field is that, being close to the pole, you can pick out several small and distant galaxies even in a narrowband image like this.

It is funny how these things work out: when I purchased my ONTC 808, it was with the intent of getting more images faster than I could with my previous small refractors. Instead, I find myself spending more time and going deeper on fainter objects.
