Description

This will very likely be the biggest project of this season, as well as the last picture taken with my trusty old Canon 1100D. Now I'm ready to move on to a whole new chapter with my first dedicated mono astrophotography camera!

I got the idea for this mosaic when I went through old data, and I saw that the last time I visited the veil nebula complex was during my first season in Trondheim, Norway. At that time, I only had a star tracker and a DSLR lens, which made multi-night sessions a huge hassle. The resulting 2-panel mosaic was nice, but I figured that during the Fall of 2023, I would practice my acquisition and processing workflow by gathering new data.

So far, the season has been rather bad, with only a few clear nights, and even then, the seeing wasn't great. Add to that that I was plagued by autofocus issues in Ekos, and I'm happy I was able to gather enough data to finish this project at all! I aimed for 10h per panel, but unfortunately I had to settle or 7,5h on one of the panels since I got too impatient Regardless, I am very happy with the data!

On the front of processing, I have been making great strides re-learning PixInsight, using BlurXterminator and finally getting decent stretches with GHS. Now I am finally getting results I am satisfied with. (It only took 4 years, lots of money and even more frustration). Truth be told, the result is not perfect yet, but good enough for me to want to share it, I hope you like it as well!
