Description

Object: Double Cluster in Perseus (Caldwell 14) (2012)

The Double Cluster in Perseus (also Caldwell 14) is comprised of two naked-eye open clusters NGC869 and NGC884 and is located in the constellation of Perseus. NGC869 is 6800 light years distant and NGC884 is 7600 light years away making the two clusters fairly close to each other in space. These are relatively young clusters as NGC869 is about 5.5 million years and NGC884 is between 3 and 3.5 million years old. The clusters contain hundreds of blue giant stars and are rushing toward us, so they appear blue shifted as well.

This was essentially a test of a new refractor and field flattener to assure the correct spacing so achieve round stars over the entire field of view. It seems to have worked! :-)
