Description

This object, nicknamed the Clamshell Nebula, is a large emission nebula located 1800 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +44 degrees. The nebula spans 2 degrees in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual width of 60 light years. The nebula is located about 2 degrees west of the North America Nebula.  

The image is a full narrowband image using the SHO palette and RGB stars.

The nebulosity surrounds a 5th magnitude bright blue star (HD 203064 - 68 Cyg). An interesting small blue reflection nebula appears around the star.  Just below and right of the central star is the faint We 2-245 (PK87-3.1) planetary nebula:

About midway between the central blue star and the lower right corner of the image is another small planetary, the bright blue OIII-dominated PN OU 5:

Finally, I like the field of many LDN-designated dark (black) nebulae which for some reason only appear in the southern half of the nebula, all pointing back up to the blue central star:
