Description

In tribute of true amateur astrophotography: This is Lower's Nebula, named after the father-and-son team of Harold and Charles Lower who discovered this beautiful nebula in the constellation Orion back in 1939.

The Lowers were amateur astronomers, accomplished telescope makers and pioneering astrophotographers from San Diego.

Night sky photography is complex enough today, but was by no means easier 80 years ago. A special, red-sensitive film had to be used and the negatives from the film had to be developed on glass plates which then had to be stacked manually and then photographed again.
