Description

This small HII-dominated emission nebula, also known as LBN 784, is located 14,000 light years away in the constellation of Auriga at a declination of +37 degrees.  It spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 12 light years.

When seen in the infrared, a small dense star cluster appears in the upper portion of the nebula between the central bright star and the pair of bright stars above.  This cluster is not visible in my image.   The dark dust clouds in the nebula are pointing to this cluster location, which is likely the source of the nebula ionization.

By coincidence, yesterday my friend Göran posted a nice wide field image of the region which contains this object, seen here.  His image has a FOV over 10x mine - his FOV is 4.13 degrees while mine is 0.38 degrees.
