Description

M81 and M82 are well-known and often-fotographed objects. Still, they are fascinating. While M81 seems undisturbed, M82 is an edge-on starburst galaxy. I find it one of the most fascinating objects in the sky, because it is close enough to be able to discern the H-alpha nebulae streaking out, formed by the star bursts.

My image went quite deep, so I tried to work out some IFN. The ribbon-like structure which seems to flow around the right side of M81 is called Arp's Loop. Arp believed it to be a flux of stars around M81. In reality, it is a stream of gas in our own galaxy which reflects the shine of the Milky Way.
