Description

This spiral galaxy is located 80 million light years away in the constellation of Pyxis at a southerly declination of -32 degrees.  It is a magnitude 11.1 galaxy which spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 140,000 light years, slightly larger than our Milky Way galaxy.

The near edge-on view, 10 degrees off of edge-on, provides a good view of the dust lanes silhouetted against the bright central glow of the galaxy.  This glow appears in the typical “X” (peanut-shape) of many central bulges.

My friend Scott (@wsg) has posted a beautiful image of this galaxy (the only other one on Astrobin) here using a Planewave from Chile.
