Description

This doublet has also been catalogued as Arp 18 and is member of Ursa Major Cluster.  Both galaxies are highly inclined spiral galaxies, with a diameter of 30000ly (NGC4085) and 65000 ly (NGC 4088). Distance: 36 Mly (NGC4085) and 37 Mly (NGC4088). The core to core separation is 12', which would be about 130000 ly if the distance is 37mly. NGC4088 has a brighter elongated core and a dusty bar. Its arms are bright, massive and tightly wound, with many knots and condesations, and a tremendous amount of dust. These two galaxies were discovered one year apart by Herschel, NGC4088 on 9 March 1788 and NGC4085 on 12 April 1789.
