Thanks to the replies!

The reason? I realized that Im just anyone and anything - Im just a guy with digital color pens trying to have some fun. All the critics opens my eyes. I received more likes than I deserved it. I didnt deserve be in the Astrophotographers list. And some APOD couldnt turn a Top Pick over here - sure my APODs were overrated. :-) But Im happy with improving my processing all over the years, and very honoured making some partnerships that I couldnt ever dream, and got the most important thing: some amazing friends!

Hi Daniel,

Your initial message caught my attention because I was initially afraid that a personal problem (health or other) would force you to leave AB... but from your last message I understand that it's only because you don't feel you get enough "likes", TP or IOTD here...

Even if I like your pictures a lot, I confess that it's an attitude that I have a hard time understanding. I say this all the more freely because I understand that you have received quite a lot of criticism; and for that matter I have never been one of the people who criticized you or your images. I don't know if it has something to do with the fact that most of your images and APODs are from pro data and not from personal data, but personnaly it has never be a problem. Everyone is free to process what he wants as long as he enjoys it and is honest about the origin of what they publish, which you do very well.

That being said, NASA's APOD likes to reward the processing of data from its own telescopes (and especially the HST...); this is not the case here where personal data are globally favored by the users and the IOTD team (even if a lot of images from third party data are rewarded). So there is not much reason to be surprised...

Personally, I think that when you are obsessed with likes and rewards, you are not doing astrophotography for the right reasons... I like to think that it remains very secondary (or "bonus") but we probably don't all see things in the same way.

Anyway, I will miss you and your images here on AB; even if you seem to consider that this site is not up to your talent (which I don't think so either).

CS !

JB I already told that I dont have any talent to continue around here...the stacks are too high...its just a dream that passed thru my mind...

For sure I received a lot of likes at my images ...Im never complaining about it...much more than I deserved from pro subs...btw processing pro images are easy?

Im not obsessed by likes ...but I know a lot of people are concerned with the numbers of likes at my images.
...did you saw my own images? I think you know very little about how hard I tried to make my ugly own images...yep its ugly but you should see my raw subs..are much worse !

A little hard to understand while you are ranked #11 here on AB... but in any case, I respect your decision.
Btw processing pro images are easy?

Never said that and I don't think so.
Just said it is surely a simpler way to reach an APOD (what you seem to confirm yourself considering your judgement on your own personnal images).

Personally, I make images both in remote and with my own material, and my personal images do not reach the level of the images made in remote: better sky, better setup... difficult to compete for sure. The main thing is to take pleasure in observing and processing the images ; if the passion or the mood are not there, it may be better to take a break and come back afterwards...

Couldn't agree more with what Jean-Baptiste is saying.

As an Astrobin staff member, I can say that there is an element of luck or chance involved in Top Picks, IOTDs, etc. just as with anything else.  Just because an image does not make TP/IOTD does not mean it is a bad image. I personally have no Top Picks, but that does not in any way stop my enjoyment of the hobby. I follow imagers whose work I respect and enjoy their images as I hope they enjoy mine.

My personal philosophy is that if I am counting on other people's adulation to enjoy my hobby, then I am giving control of my enjoyment to other people. I realize it may be different for other people.

Ill always have passion for the night sky ....I NEVER have any decent gear nor dark skies around here...never have contacts when I started nor money nor courses ever, but I have to process more "Hubble" images because my solution to express my love to the night sky is to IMAGINE and DREAM about the starry night sky that I just saw once...HOW YOU COULD POST ANY IMAGE IF YOU DIDNT HAVE DARK SKIES, GEAR and MONEY?
So Ill STAY on ASTROBIN to represent THIS people who havent good gear, or even have no Camera, and so has to express your emotions with the FREE images from anywhere, because the night sky is there expecting for everyone, with no money, bias and country boundaries. I will stay because of my friends... I saw this site growing as well, its become just like some part of my history, and If I leave I think Ill do some harm to myself. And If I could contribute with just one poor image, or giving motivation for who are starting, I will.

Hi Daniel,
Yes, the best way to contribute and to enhance, what you have just expressed, is to stay and do what you seems to like a lot. There are many possibilities within AB, and it is nice to share among those that also like these beauties, in the very same way as you do.
Recognition is something different and it may come in the more unexpected way, just give a chance to that to happen. I have shared my data with friends that are far better than me in processing, and I enjoy a lot what they have achieved, is one of the nice things in AB, you get to know some friends that may produce what your raw data can offer, and it is very nice.

Sooner I may be able to share a project I have for education, for kids in my area, that are under a very unfair/low quality/and so on educational local system. Thanks to AB I got several ideas that will make those kids to have acces to a different view of the sky, many of them, as you said, with no camera, maybe a cell phone, but someone has to teach them, and that is what I intend to do, but also to offer the chance to go beyond that, perhaps one day they will be part of AB as well, and who knows, maybe one of them will be an astrophysicist, that will mean a lot of likes for me, you can be sure of that.
But let me tell you that without the inspiration I got here in AB, that would have been a project a lot more complicated, because here I learned many things that I can pass on now, that on my own, alone, it would have taken ages.

Cheers and welcome back, if ever you left.

Daniel, I'm saddened by your decision but hope you'll find your passion for the hobby again someday. If anyone gets more likes than they deserve, its me lol. Your work is not overrated in any way. At the risk of being presumptuous, I believe I speak for the whole community regarding your work. You're an amazing imager. Be well and I wish you luck in your pursuits, but hope to see more from you Daniel.

Regards,
Jim (Itto Ogami)

Old but true cliche: "If no bird sang in the forest but the finest, the forest would be a very quiet place."   We need everyone in the amateur imaging community to make it a community.

I think that when you go outside on the first warm, clear night of the spring, and you see a "perfect 10" imaging night on its way, you'll be scurrying to deploy your gear.   It sounds to me like you just need a slight break to renew your vigor!

I don't think I can express more than what the others said earlier, but your images are beautiful. I've tried my hand at Hubble processing and it's no joke. Heck, now I'm inspired to try out some of the data you pulled from. People too often focus on the gear associated with an image, whether it's all owned by you, etc.. We're all creating artwork in the end essentially, so create what makes you happy.

I think in everyone's AP life comes a point, where he or she suffers from a Astro-Fatique. Whenever passion becomes obsession you should make a break, otherwise you risk an Astro-Burn-Out. A creative rest (or reset) is something very helpful. Take a deep breath and some time out and start over with fresh energy. This also brings back the joy and fun

As plenty of ancient wisdom tells us: forget about focusing on the result and expected appreciation by others and just enjoy the process of creating artwork.

Thank you for your inspiring contributions and best wishes for the future

Best wishes on future endeavors.  I actually retired from astronomy (visual) for about 10 years (working 2 jobs, playing mens league ice hockey, raising a family) and astronomy took a back seat .  I decided about 2 years ago to get back into it (back to working 1 job) and since summer 2021 decided to learn the photography side of it (one of my 2 jobs was a wedding photographer ).  I am glad I returned especially since the grandkids love when we set up the system (visual and photography). Take your time off and enjoy life (great gallery)
