My answer to the invention with the most impact was language and agriculture.

The most impressive achievment is to this day the moon landing.

The impressive part is to pull off something that complex with no chance to test the system before sending humans.

In my experience as an engineer, even the most simple system is usually not sucessful the very the first time you test it.

(I realize they could test sub systems, but still)

I would offer for consideration the printing press. This was the invention that allowed for the wide dissemination  of information to so many people who heretofore had been left “in the dark”.

Probably going to have to go with language, or math. Quite literally nothing is possible without them, and LHC or ISS are just applications of them.
