Hello Everyone, I recently took an image of M106 and I’m trying to find out what magnitude 2 galaxies are in the image. They are circled in the attached image but here is a link that shows them much clearer in higher resolution. https://www.astrobin.com/i0m1c5/B/ I normally use Sky Safari Pro 7 but it only goes down to 18th magnitude and does not show the 2 circled galaxies. I’ve done a lot of net searching and best I can guess is 20-21 magnitude. Can someone point me to the catalogues you guys use that gives you this kind of data? Thanks! Dale |

Try the CDS portal: http://simbad.cds.unistra.fr/simbad/sim-id?Ident=m106&NbIdent=1&Radius=30&Radius.unit=arcmin&submit=submit+id |

Simbad query at the coordinates of the object you're after may be? http://simbad.cds.unistra.fr/simbad/sim-coo?Coord=12+18+25.99996678193+%2B47+26+43.0074717368&Radius=5&Radius.unit=arcmin&submit=submit+query |

Hey Dale, I suppose you can also use the platesolve and annotate image tool (something similar sounding) in pixinsight. You may need to download some database. Just google how to use the tool (if you don't know, i.e.). I had once played around with it. Was quite effective. |

andrea tasselli: Thank you Andrea, I’m looking around the site now trying to figure out how to get the sky charts to work with. Much appreciated. Dale |

Thanks Mintakaite, I watched Adam Blocks video on using it but again still can’t identify the 2 galaxies circled. There doesn’t seem to be much on using that tool. Dale |

Dale Penkala: The two galaxies are on the SDSS R9 survey. Unfortunately I can't make out the numbers. I'd to rescale the image. Just add the SDSS R9 survey to the AnnotateImage script under Render (click on the big green plus sign on the left). From the SDSS survey number you'd use Vizier to get the underlying data. |

I think, squinting really hard as the field is choked full of labels, these are the two little critters: SDSSJ121822.66+472721.8 SDSSJ121832.13+472602.1 |

andrea tasselli: Thank you for all this Andrea! When I get back in front of my computer I’ll try this using your suggestions! I’ll see what I can find out magnitude wise! Dale |

Try this site: Aladin Lite 1) Search on M106 2) Check the SIMBAD box in the pop-up 3) Click the green dot over the object in question. Information will pop up. You'll at least get a name for the faint fuzzies in question, which could lead to their magnitude with further searching. |
