Description

SH2-68, known as The Flaming Skull Nebula is a planetary nebula in Serpens Cauda...the serpent's tail.  As a medium sized star like our Sun nears the end of its life and has consumed the last of its fuel, it expels a large portion of its atmosphere producing a gaseous sphere of gas called a planetary nebula. These gases are ionized by the remnant star causing it to glow. The ionized hydrogen gases glow reddish, and the ionized oxygen gases glow blueish cyan. As SH2-68's central star, now a white dwarf (seen as the faint blue star in the center of the blueish area), moves through our Milky Way galaxy along with its glowing gas remains, it leaves a faint trail of gas behind it as seen to the upper right of this image.
