Description

The California Nebula (also NGC 1499 and Sharpless 220) is a bright emission nebula located about 1500 light years distant.  Its emission is due to the excitation of the Hb line in the nebula by nearby star Xi Persei - one of the hottest naked-eye stars with a surface temperature of over 60000 deg F (34000 deg C).  The nebula is almost 2.5 degrees long in the sky (approximately 100 light years in diameter) and was discovered by E. E. Barnard in 1884.

Imaged over several nights:  Oct 21, 24, 28, 30; Nov 1-2, and 4, 2022.
