Description

NGC 2403 - an intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation Camelopardalis

This is a nice object for my current setup sizewise, and I picked it because it's currently very high on the horizon. Last friday and saturday I finally had clear skies since basically forever, and the freezing temperatures couldn't stop me to test out my new equipment - a Zwo ASI183MC Pro, a Zwo OAG and the Zwo AsiAir Pro. The camera is amazing - I love it already! the OAG gave me troubles in the first night because I couldn't focus (turns out I had to get rid of the extension tube of the guidecam, found out in daylight) so I did 30 second unguided subs on friday. Saturday however it worked and I got the best guiding RMS I ever had on my mount - on average I was around 0.5" RMS total, impressive for a sub 1000€ mount tbh.

This galaxy was difficult to process for me because I didn't quite hit focus perfectly (FWHM of 4-5 is not good, I know) because I broke my bahtinov mask by accident in the dark and did guesswork while focusing (new one is in the mail already however), on top of that the temperature fell quickly from -5 to -10 degrees and I couldn't push myself outside into the cold, especially not since everything else (guiding, tracking, platesolving, meridianflip, imaging) ran perfectly and I could observe it on my tablet in the cozy livingroom thanks to AsiAir Pro.

I however reached a result which makes me quite happy (slightly blotchy background noise and bloated stars aside), especially colourwise I love it.

Description: I started from scratch and tried to fix this messy data. It has so many issues, it's hilarious. Noisy af because of the 30 second subs, a gradient bigger than the white house and on top of that, it's out of focus. You don't want to see the initial autostretch which showed all the flaws. I think I did my best trying to fix this and learned a lot while doing this.
