Description

This rich cluster of well over 100 stars in Cygnus is roughly 2800 parsecs away from us. I thought I would capture it while I was waiting for the the moon to set before imaging some dimmer targets.

The intensely red star in the lower right corner of the image is long period variable V1274 Cyg varying less in magnitude in a cycle of 210 days. I couldn't find any magnitude range measurements. The star is embedded in a dusty envelop of ejected carbon and oxygen that absorbs almost all of the light the star emits that s shorter than visible red wavelengths which gives it its saturated red color.

I resized the image to 50% of its original bin 1x1 scale. Each of the subs was composed of 120 one second exposures live stacked in SharpCap.
