Description

Nestled between the Orion nebula and the Witch Head nebula, SH2-278 is an often overlooked dark nebula complex rimmed with abundant Ha emissions.  This type of nebulosity is aptly called Bright Rimmed Clouds or BRCs.

Several Herbig Haro objects are revealed by multiple red knots of nebulosity visible near the center-left of image.  These are narrow jets of partially ionized gas that are launched by young protostars that have formed in within the dense molecular cloud.  The gas collides with adjacent matter which results in the bright emission.

The blue smudge on top right of the image is a bit of interstellar dust that is reflecting blue light from nearby bright star Rigel.  Rigel is also responsible for illuminating the nearby Witch Head nebula.
