Description

Owl Nebula (M97 / NGC 3587)
  • Type: Planetary Nebula
  • Distance: 2,600 light years from Earth
  • Size: 0.9 light years
  • Apparent size: 3.4 x 3.3 arc minutes
  • Apparent magnitude: 9.9
  • Age: 8,000 years
  • Constellation: Ursa Major
  • Interesting notes:
    • Planetary nebulae are a type of emission nebula formed when a red giant ejects ionized gas near the end of its life
    • The Owl Nebula is an example of what will happen to the Sun when it runs out of hydrogen sometime around 5 billion years from now

Surfboard Galaxy (M108 / NGC 3556)
  • Type: Barred spiral galaxy
  • Distance: 46 million light years from Earth
  • Stars: 400 billion
  • Size: 110,000 light years
  • Apparent size: 8.7 x 2.2 arc minutes
  • Apparent magnitude: 10.2
  • Age: 13.27 billion years
  • Constellation: Ursa Major
  • Interesting Notes:
    • The Surfboard Galaxy is thought to be a barred spiral galaxy, but from our perspective it is difficult to tell
