Description

The Omega Nebula, also known as Messier 17 (M17), is a bright emission nebula located in the constellation Sagittarius. It is also known as the Swan Nebula, Checkmark Nebula, Lobster Nebula, and the Horseshoe Nebula.

The Omega Nebula is a star-forming region and is one of the largest in our galaxy.  It is located between 5,000 and 6,000 light-years from Earth.  It contains more gas than the Orion Nebula, which makes it one of the best places to study how stars form.

The name is derived from the resembelance to the greek letter, omega.

This object sits very low in my southern sky.  This image is 3 hours of exposure with little opportunity to acquire more this season.
