Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a small polar ring galaxy located 260 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of -8 degrees.

Studies have concluded that the bright yellow object is the main galaxy, a spindle-shaped S0 galaxy seen edge-on.  This magnitude 16.5 galaxy spans about 35 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 50,000 light years.

The dimmer blue ring perpendicular to and surrounding the main galaxy is about 140,000 light years in diameter.  This rotating polar ring consists of younger stars and is believed to be due to a transfer of mass from a companion galaxy, which has now been absorbed in the merger.

This object is similar in structure and size to II Zwicky 73, which is seen here.
