Description

NGC 6888 - The Crescent Nebula, (located in the constellation of Cygnus, the Swan), is about 25 light-years across and blown by solar wind from its massive central star Wolf-Rayet 136. Oxygen atoms produce the blue-green hue that enshroud the detailed folds and filaments. The star continues to shed its outer envelope in a strong stellar wind, ejecting the equivalent of the Sun's mass every 10,000 years. The nebula's complex structures are the result of this strong wind interacting with material ejected in an earlier phase. It is burning fuel at a prodigious rate and is near the end of its stellar life, and thus, this star should ultimately go supernova. NGC 6888 is about 5,000 light-years away. Processed in Ha.
