Description

Located roughly 1,400 light years away from Earth, the Ghost nebula is the dominant feature at the lower end of the image.  It is illuminated by bright stars that are embedded within the dense dusty clouds.

There is active star formation happening in these clouds.   On the right side of the Ghost nebula, you can see a cone shaped structure.  This is a Bok globule cataloged as CB230.  A Bok globule is an area of dense clouds that are in the process of condensing and forming protostars.  The same feature is also cataloged as Herbig Haro object HH 157.  Herbig Haro objects are formed when narrow jets of partially ionized gas are ejected by stars which then collide with nearby clouds of gas and dust.  The jets are aligned with the stars rotational axis and they are visible in the image.

This image was captured over a particularly good run of nights at SRO featuring ideal sub arc-second seeing conditions.  There are so many great renditions of this region on Astrobin!  The goal in processing was to present it in a somewhat unique way.  I hope you like it.
