Description

My last post (without notification) was a wide field of the Clam Nebula, here, (this version has a starless mouseover where you can easily see this PN).   When first integrated that wide field clamshell, I thought I had a hot pixel...but turned out to be a PN!  NGC7048 also known as the peek-a-boo nebula.  So I went after it with my largest focal length, my 9.25HD with reducer at 1656mm.   My first PN ever!  I took lots of Ha and a fair amount of RGB.  The Ha added so much fine nebulosity around the thing.  It was a pleasure to process a small file size from the 2600MM which was also seriously cropped. (compared to the 6200MM monsters).  If you have time take a look at full resolution, I should do a mouseover zoom...not bad for a backyard warrior with full moon!  -john

from Wikipedia: NGC 7048 is a planetary nebula in the constellation of Cygnus. The bright star to the lower left of the nebula is a magnitude 10.5 star, designated TYC 3589-4652-1. The nebula is slightly brighter along the west and east sides. This planetary nebula has an apparent magnitude of 12.1. NGC 7048 was discovered by Édouard Stephan on 19 October 1878 using a 31.5-inch reflector.  The central star of NGC 7048 is thought to be a white dwarf. The planetary nebula itself has an elliptical shape; from its low surface brightness it is thought to be highly evolved.
