Description

This image captures two galaxies in the northern constellation of Draco. Although they appear to be close to each other and similar in size, they are not. NGC 5963 (lower right) is 100,000 light years in diameter and 85 million light years away, while NGC 5965 (upper left) is much larger and more distant, at 240,000 light years in diameter and 160 million light years away.

Although both of these galaxies are spiral in structure, their appearances to us are vastly different. Bluish NGC 5963 is face-on to our apparent view. I like the diffuse nature of the faint blue spiral arms of this galaxy, which is classified as a low surface brightness galaxy.

Like many edge-on spiral galaxies, NGC 5965 has a yellow central core and warped blue outer edges. Note that the galaxy is not perfectly symmetric, with a longer arm on the right side.

This galaxy may be interacting with the small spiral galaxy seen just above it.  I could not find distance information for this small galaxy.  If it is at the same distance, it has a diameter of 30,000 light years, which is consistent with its appearance.
