Description

The Monkey Head (NGC 2174) contains an open cluster NGC 2175, and is also known as SH2-252.  It is an emission nebula thought to be about 6350 LY from earth, and is fairly large, a bit larger than the full moon.  Visible (vaguely) in binoculars, a regular color image shows mostly red but the narrow band separation gives (false) colors from all three filters. It is a star forming region, with young stars near the center exciting (and pushing away) gas and dust, creating the interesting shapes along the edges.

This was my first project of nebula season for 2023, and I used the SVX152T and had a surprising run of good nights in what was nominally still rainy season.  This is from seven nights, a bit short for each as it rose late, and represents about 9.4 hours of Ha, 9 hours of Sii and 8 hours of Oiii. I had fairly good seeing, yielding a fair amount of detail for a relatively brief accumulation of data.

The image was taken on the AP1100AE with an ASI6200MM with Chroma 5nm filters. The RGB stars are from very brief (about 15 minutes each in 30s exposures) and added in afterwards to replace the narrowband stars.
