Description

1,500 light years away in Auriga, a trouble is brewing. The Flaming Star Nebula, IC 405, churns violently in its central region powered by the runaway star AE Aurigae. The central region of the nebula, with its swirls and streams, is strongly reminiscent of the clouds and storms on Jupiter. Astronomers believe, based on its radial motion, that AE Aurigae may have originated two or three million years ago in the Trapezium Cluster deep inside the Orion Nebula, Messier 42. It may have been ejected by the interaction of binary star systems and is now coursing through Auriga stirring up conflict with its bow shock. When it exits the area, it's quite possible that the Flaming Star Nebula will no longer burn.

Title: Maelstrom Crop

Description: I wanted to focus on this part of the image because I find it very compelling. This is really the part that reminds me of the clouds on Jupiter--but what's happening in this picture is occurring on a far larger scale. When on the moon, Buzz Aldrin remarked that it was "magnificent desolation." This image evokes a similar feeling in me, but I would characterize it as the magnificent fury of an interstellar storm.
