Description

SH2-129 and OU-4 are better known as the Flying Bat and Giant Squid Nebula, and are located in the constellation Cepheus near the famous and more frequently imaged Elephant Trunk Nebula. SH2-129 is an an ionized hydrogen gas emission nebula glowing red, while OU4 is a doubly ionized oxygen emission nebula glowing cyan.  OU4 was only recently discovered in 2011 due to it being extremely faint. In fact, to get this nebula to show up, I have 28 hours of total integration time for the OIII filter alone which picks up OU4 primarily.  An additional 10 hours of integration time using the Ha filter which primarily picks up the red SH2-129.  Also I have 1 hour each of red, green and blue filters to bring out the star color. This nebula is 2300 light years away and 50 light years across, and covers a relatively large area of sky roughly 6-7 times the diameter of the full moon, yet remaining invisible to the naked eye.
