Description

This is an intriguing region.

I say "intriguing" because this region has a little bit of everything: interstellar gas; emission, reflection and dark nebulae, active star-forming regions, the wonderful star cluster at the center of the nebula itself, the beautiful µ-Cephei Hypergiant (Erakis) nearby, and, of course, the iconic "Elephant Trunk". This area is properly a subgroup of the Cepheus OB-2 Stellar Association (Cep OB2).

It is a much more complicated region than would first seem and I think the real challenge of this region is capturing all of these nuances. It is not simply "Hydrogen Alpha" or a SHO palette waiting to be painted. That, of course, only speaks to my prejudices and priorities.

The complexity of the region is primarily due to the small, oft-forgotten open cluster at the heart of the region. This cluster is dominated by the triple star system, HD 206267. This triplet is composed of two "O" Class and one "B" Class stars, extremely massive, very luminous and spewing UV radiation that will ultimately shorten these stars' lives. As a result, the triplet is generating a powerful stellar wind (one of the fastest recorded) that has ionized the gas of the nebula and is blowing away surrounding molecular clouds. These stars are indirectly interacting with all the other nearby stars, leading to the creating of the various dark nebulae (Barnard objects in this case) and the Elephant's Trunk Nebula itself.

Here are just some of the named features in this part of the Cep OB2 Association:

IC 1396 = The Open Cluster (group of stars). Also referred to as Trumpler 37.

HD 206267 = Triplet Star system at core of open cluster IC 1396

Sh2-131 = The greater H II region (Hydrogen alpha spectral lines)

VdB 132 = Reflection Nebula (a young stellar object)

B161, B163 = Dark Nebulae

Elephant Trunk Nebula = Globule of compressed molecular cloud in the greater H II region, caused by the interaction of HD 206267 with other bodies.

Mu-Cep, µ-Cephei, Erakis, Herschel's Garnet Star, HD 206936 = Daniel's favorite star.

This is such a fascinating region to study. There are many such regions, of course, but I think that sometimes we get lost in our projects, procedures, and processes that we don't stop long enough to linger and contemplate the dynamism of creation and destruction that we witness with our scopes and cameras. I hope I have given you something to stop and think about!
